In the present project, the main tasks attributed to the food packaging team of DISTAM will be the coordination of WP1 (Natural antimicrobials selection) and the participation in WP2 (Active material development), in WP4 (Food safety: Chemical and microbiological risks assessments) and in Food Quality (WP5).

CSIC is the Spanish State research organization with outstanding reputation in research and technology within the area of food science. The research group participating in this project belongs to the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA-CSIC). The group has considerable experience in food packaging science and technology and food quality and safety, and their labs are well equipped for packaging material development and characterization, analysis of food/package interactions, chemical contamination and microbiological safety of preserved foods.

The CSIC is involved in WP1, WP3, WP4 and is WP2 leader through the following tasks: evaluation of antimicrobials activity and their thermal and chemical stability (WP1), development of filmable active materials by coating and extrusion and the design of bags and lids for fresh-produce packaging, and risk assessment based on toxicology of the materials produced and microbiology of the final products.
